GiewubaeIn Mende, the language that we speak around here, Giewubae means "On top of the hill". We decided upon this name because the Eco-camp is located on top of a hill overlooking the Moa River and Tiwai (meaning "big island" in Mende) on which is situated Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary. From the camp you can see as far as the Kambui Hills that stretch as far as Kenema. To see more photos, click here.
NaturalWhen we created Giewubae we decided to retain as much of the natural environment as possible and make it our mission to protect it and teach the local community to do the same. The camp is made of natural and local materials sourced in a sustainable way to make our visitors feel immersed in the beautiful natural settings of the area whilst maintaining a relaxed and down-to-earth atmosphere.
FriendlyThe camp is managed by Chief Hindowa (Hindowa means 'Great Man' in Mende). It was his vision and dedication to create employment opportunities for his fellow community members that allowed for Giewubae to exist. In so doing, the camp has a community atmosphere that reflects the hospitality and friendliness that the Mende people are well-known for. To learn more about the local community, click here.
SustainableWe believe that Giewubae Eco-camp should reflect the potential for every human being to live in harmony with their surroundings, play their part in the surrounding rich biodiversity, and in so doing minimise the negative impacts that the project has on the environmental and social aspects of our land. Sustainability is at the centre of our ethos and we work hard to maintain it. Click here to read our responsible tourism policy.
