Kambama community is one of eight surrounding Tiwai Island Wildlife sanctuary. With its 400 plus inhabitants, it is a medium village that is pretty typical of Sierra Leone's rural areas, however it has had the opportunity to benefit a little from tourism and the NGOs that work in the area. It has a simple solar system that allows the school, pump and village communal shelter to be lit up during the night, and for phones to be charged. It also boasts a rice mill, a pump, a couple of rice drying floors and some bee hives (implemented by EFA and WHH). The community members are proud of their village and their culture, and have been instrumental in developing a heritage trail that showcases the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the land they love (see the maps below).

These maps were designed by the Kambama community and planned and illustrated by two volunteers that worked for 16 months with the eight local communities surrounding Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary to develop a heritage trail that aims to create local economic development opportunities for the poor in rural areas of Sierra Leone. In so doing the rich cultural and historical heritage were uncovered and legends were re-told. This was not only fascinating for the researchers, but also for the young community members who had never heard these stories told. The heritage trail is now up and running and the communities are waiting to welcome you. For more information, visit the Tiwai Heritage Trail website.
